چکیده

Vortex formation and force generation of clapping plates with various aspect ratios (AR) and stroke angles were investigated. Experiments were performed with a pair of hinged rectangular plates that were rotated symmetrically in a static fluid, and defocusing digital particle image velocimetry was employed to measure the threedimensional flow field. Single-plate cases were also studied to compare with clapping plate cases. As AR decreases, both circulation of the tip vortex and area enclosed by the vortex loop increase inversely. An empirical power-law relationship with a negative exponent is found between total impulse and AR for a given stroke angle. The sensitivity of the force generated by the plates to the change of AR is larger at the smaller stroke angle because of faster acceleration and deceleration. The increase in impulse per plate from the single-plate case to the clapping double-plate case is larger for lower AR. These results reveal that low AR wings are more efficient in propulsive force generation in some specific modes of unsteady flapping flight. The evolution of the wake structures is found to depend on AR and stroke angle.

Effect of Vertical Plates on Reducing Vortex Using Experimental Data

This paper is about experimental results for partial reduction of vortex at vertical pipe intakes. One of the easiest and practical ways of reducing vortex effect is to use anti-vortex plates or baffles. These plates can be used to avoid the vortex completely or partially. This paper will concentrate on the latter case. Rectangular plates with different dimensions have been placed at different ...

A New Technique for the Calculation of Colliding Vortex Rings

The present study involves a novel computational technique, regarding simultaneous use of the pseudo particle method, Poisson integral method and a special-purpose computer originally designed for molecular dynamics simulations (MDGRAPE-3). In the present calculations, the dynamics of two colliding vortex rings have been studied using the vortex method. The present acceleration technique allows...

Discharge Coefficient in Vertical Intakes with Additional Plates

One of the causes of perturbation at vertical intakes is the happening of vortices with an air core. The vortices with an air core occur whenever the submergence of the intake is less than a critical value. Anti-vortex devices and specially plates are used to avoid the negative effects of the air-core vortices. If plates are used, then the geometry of them should be studied experimentally. Acco...

Influences of Small-Scale Effect and Boundary Conditions on the Free Vibration of Nano-Plates: A Molecular Dynamics Simulation

This paper addresses the influence of boundary conditions and small-scale effect on the free vibration of nano-plates using molecular dynamics (MD) and nonlocal elasticity theory. Based on the MD simulations, Large-scale Atomic/Molecular Massively Parallel Simulator (LAMMPS) is used to obtain fundamental frequencies of single layered graphene sheets (SLGSs) which modeled in this paper as the mo...
